About Our Doctor: About Dr. Strauss
Elton Strauss, MD, FACS
Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
Elton Strauss is a senior member of the academic
faculty at the Mount Sinai Medical School Department of Orthopedics. His
academic rank is Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Strauss
has been in practice for over 28 years, during which time, he has dedicated
himself to the treatment of the most difficult cases involving fractures
and arthritis. As a tertiary referral physician, many of the surgeon's in
the tri-state area refer their most complicated cases to his service. Dr.
Strauss has shown his expertise in performing reconstructive procedures
involving the most modern techniques. These include the use of uncemented
implants, allograft materials for structural support, and state of the art
metal prostheses.
His excellence in
these two areas has gained him admittance by peer approval to the American
Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, as well as the Orthopedic Trauma Association.
Qualifications to enter these two societies are recommendations from colleagues
in the field. Dr. Strauss is Board Certified and has passed
examinations given by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons.
He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
This year he has received the additional honor of being admitted
to the Academic Orthopaedic Association. A society of the
highest respect in academic orthopaedics.
Dr. Strauss has performed a great number of primary and revision total joint
replacements of both the hip and knee. He is one of the principle surgeons at
Mount Sinai who is using ceramic total hips. As a reconstructive surgeon, he
has performed multiple surgical procedures for fractures as well as the complications
of nonunion and malunion. These include fractures of the upper and lower extremity.
Problems such as Osteomyelitis and limb lengthening are subspecialties that he
has treated a multitude of patients from the United States and international
Countries.
As an additional honor, he has been named the Associate Chief of
the Orthopedic Geriatric Hip Fracture Service at Mount Sinai. For
his work in geriatric medicine the American Academy of Orthopedic
Surgeons has recognized him by being asked to serve as Chairman of
the Committee on Aging. In May 2001 he gave one of the keynote addresses
on the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee to the American Geriatric
Society meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Strauss has been recognized by many national societies in peer
review journals and textbooks. His use of low intensity ultrasound
to stimulate bone healing has been reported at many national and international
meetings. This technique, that had its early pioneer work at Mount
Sinai, is used to enhance fracture and nonunion.
Orthopedic surgery has been involved in the many advances in computer-assisted,
robotic-assisted and navigational and image-guided technology. The
future for these procedures is at our fingertips. Recently, Dr. Strauss
participated in two international seminars that were instrumental
in the release of a navigational hip replacement and computer-assisted
reconstruction device of the femur. Both of these technologies will
have their home at Mount Sinai and will be integrated in Dr. Strauss'
technique in hip replacement surgery, and in the near future in knee
replacement as well.
Imagine opening the shell of an egg without disturbing the inner
environment. The use of technology is available and will enhance our
already excellent results in joint replacement. This high-tech procedure
and others are being developed in conjunction with the minimally invasive
surgical service at Mount Sinai.
The orthopedic geriatric service at the Mount Sinai Medical Center
is a multi-disciplinary team of physicians and workers in other fields
necessary for the care of the geriatric patient. This unique concept
addresses the orthopedic problems as well as the medical and social
issues of the patient with musculoskeletal disease. Patients with
fractured hips or joint replacements are placed on this service. The
concept has received national and international acclaim. It continues
to work diligently to improve the outcomes of the geriatric patient,
especially those who have suffered an acute fractured hip.
Dr. Strauss is part of the Academic Orthopedic Department at the
Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is available to see patients at his office
adjacent to the hospital. Please do not hesitate to call for a consultation.
Most insurance policies are honored.
